Neolamprologus nigraventris
Neolamprologus nigraventris
Neolamprologus is the biggest division of the "super-genus" Lamprologus. It contains mid to large size members with medium profiles. Not very precise-and probably subject to more splitting in the future. From an aquarium viewpoint they are versatile fish that fit a range of tank sizes and communities.

Nigraventris are rare in the wild, and coupled with their dark coloration they must be the devil to catch. In captivity they are considered difficult to breed. They often pair off quickly but with no egg production. Males tend to darken with age but the females keep their unique bi-color pattern. The fry (see inset) have pale yellow bodies with strong yellow fins. This is a challenging and beautiful fish.
